چکیده

The conventional K-Ar dating method was applied to the 1986 dacite flow from the new lava dome at Mount St. Helens, Washington. Porphyritic dacite which solidified on the surface of the lava dome in 1986 gives a whole rock K-Ar “age” of 0.35±0.05 million years (Ma). Mineral concentrates from the dacite which formed ins 1986 give K-Ar “ages” from 0.34±0.06 Ma (feldspar-glass concentrate) to 2.8±0.6 Ma (pyroxene concentrate). These “ages” are, of course, preposterous. The fundamental dating assumption (“no radiogenic argon was present when the rock formed”) is questioned by these data. Instead, data from this Mount St. Helens dacite argue that significant “excess argon” was present when the lava solidified in 1986. Phenocrysts of orthopyroxene, hornblende, and plagioclase are interpreted to have occluded argon within their mineral structures deep in the magma chamber and to have retained this argon after emplacement and solidification of the dacite. The amount of argon occluded is probably a function of the argon pressure when mineral crystallization occurred at depth and/or the tightness of the mineral structure. Orthopyroxene retains the most argon, followed by hornblende, and finally, plagioclase. The lava dome at Mount St. Helens dates very much older than its true age because phenocryst minerals inherit argon from the magma. The study of this Mount St. Helens dacite causes the more fundamental question to be asked—how accurate are K-Ar “ages” from the many other phenocryst-containing lava

Mount St. Helens and Santiaguito lava domes: The effect of short- term eruption rate on surface texture and degassing processes

In order to assess the effect of eruption rate on the surface morphology and degassing mechanisms of silicic lava flows, we studied surface characteristics and obtained water content and hydrogen isotopic values of samples from flows at the Mount St. Helens and Santiaguito lava domes. We compared the surface textures and inferred degassing processes to short-term extrusion rates and found that ...

Periodic behavior in lava dome eruptions

Lava dome eruptions commonly display fairly regular alternations between periods of high activity and periods of low or no activity. The time scale for these alternations is typically months to several years. Here we develop a generic model of magma discharge through a conduit from an open-system magma chamber with continuous replenishment. The model takes account of the principal controls on f...

Monitoring eruptive activity at Mount St. Helens with TIR image data

[1] Thermal infrared (TIR) data from the MASTER airborne imaging spectrometer were acquired over Mount St. Helens in Sept and Oct, 2004, before and after the onset of recent eruptive activity. Pre-eruption data showed no measurable increase in surface temperatures before the first phreatic eruption on Oct 1. MASTER data acquired during the initial eruptive episode on Oct 14 showed maximum tempe...

Petrogenesis of Mount St. Helens Dacitic Magmas

The most frequent and voluminous eruptive Kurasawa, 1983], (4) partial melting of the lower crust products at Mount St. Helens are dacitic in composition, [e.g., Grant et al., 1984; Reid and Cole, 1983], and (5) although a wide variety of magma types (basalt to formation of compositional gradients in response to rhyodacite) is represented. To address the petrogenesis of convective and diffusive...

Dynamics of seismogenic volcanic extrusion , Mount St . Helens , 2004 - 2005

behaviour characterized by nearly steady extrusion of a solid dacite plug and nearly periodic shallow earthquakes. Diverse data motivate the hypothesis that these earthquakes resulted from stick-slip motion along the margins of the plug as it was forced incrementally upward by ascending, solidifying, gas-poor magma. We formalize this hypothesis with a dynamical model that reveals a strong analo...
